Discovering life’s deepest lessons in the rhythm of waves.
Last Sunday, a few of my friends and I planned to go to the beach early in the morning to watch the sunrise. I’ve always loved beaches—the sound of the waves, the cool breeze, and the peace they somehow bring.
We had to leave before dawn to make it on time. The only problem was that we had all slept very late the previous night. I was exhausted and seriously considered staying back. But then another thought crossed my mind: the fear of missing out on these little moments with my friends. Those moments don’t come around every day. So I got ready and went along.
We reached a little later than we had planned, but it didn’t really matter. The clouds had already decided that we weren’t going to see the sunrise we had come for.
So we made the most of the morning anyway.
We took pictures, chased each other along the shore, laughed at absolutely anything, and even played throwball. After a while, I got tired and decided to step away for a few minutes while the others continued playing.
I stood there, facing the sea.
A gentle breeze brushed across my face, carrying with it the familiar scent of salt and the sound of endless waves. I looked down at my feet and watched each wave roll in, gently sinking them a little deeper into the wet sand before retreating back into the ocean.
After a while, I looked up at my friends. One of them missed the ball, and it landed in the water. The waves carried it back and forth, almost as if they were playing with it too.
As I stood there watching everything unfold, a simple thought came to my mind.
Sometimes, the simplest moments in life teach us the most valuable lessons.
Take the seashore, for example.
The shore is like our life, and every wave is like a new chapter.
With every wave, something is brought to the shore, and something else is taken away. No two waves are ever exactly the same. Each one leaves behind something different. Yet nothing truly stays there forever.
Some shells, pieces of driftwood, or footprints disappear with the very next wave. Others remain for a little longer because they have settled deeper into the sand or reached farther up the shore before the water returns to claim them.
Life isn’t very different.
Every season brings new people, new experiences, new opportunities, and sometimes even new dreams. Some become part of our lives only for a brief moment before they quietly leave. Others find a deeper place in our hearts and lives, remaining with us until the time comes for them to leave. And when they do, they leave behind memories that remain long after they’re gone.
But eventually, life keeps moving.
Just as the waves never stop arriving, life never stops bringing something new. And with time, the traces of what once seemed impossible to lose slowly begin to fade. Not because they never mattered, but because life has a quiet way of helping us make room for what comes next.
Nothing in life is truly permanent.
Not success.
Not failure.
Not people.
Not seasons.
And thankfully, not even pain.
Maybe that’s what makes life beautiful.
Just as every wave brings something new to the shore, every season of life brings something new to us.
And maybe that’s enough to keep moving forward.
